Saroj Khan got her first break as an independent choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam in 1974 but it was Sridevi’s Hawa Hawai from Mr India in 1987 also starring Anil Kapoor, for her to receive acclaim as a dance choreographer. It was her work with Madhuri Dixit that made her famous. She has choreographed many numbers for Madhuri and Sridevi respectively. Aapart from them she has worked with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan a couple of times, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kangan ranaut and Sonam Kapoor.
Saroj Khan was admitted in Guru Nanak Hospital at Bandra, Mumbai on June 17. She was admitted due to breathing complaints, and died of cardiac arrest at 1:52 AM early today, Friday, July 3rd. The legendary choreographer had AIDS, severe diabetes and related illness, and had tested negative for COVID-19. She was 71 at the time of her death. Saroj Khan is survived by her husband B. Sohanlal, son Hamid Khan and daughters Hina Khan and Sukyna Khan. 
Mr India starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi was a blockbuster hit. The song ‘Kaate Nahi Katte’ became an instant hit. ‘Ek Do Teen’ from Tezaab starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit is still the favourite song of many especially for the dance steps. She also won the Filmfare for Best Choreography. Nigahen, the sequel to Nagina, starred Sridevi and Sunny Deol. The song ‘Main Nagin Tu Sapera’ was also a hit. Chandni starring Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Sridevi was very popular for its songs and the exquisite choreography. ‘Dhak Dhak’ from Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit starrer ‘Beta sent everyone into a frenzy. She also won the Filmfare for Best Choreography.
‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen’ from Baazigar starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol also had catchy and unique steps. ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ from Khalanayak starring Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit was the most popular song of its time and still is. She also won the Filmfare for Best Choreography. ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s colourful and grand film starring Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ajay Devgn. All the songs from the film are well appreciated especially ‘Nimbuda Nimbuda’. Taal starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bcahchan and Akshaye Khanna revolves around dance. And so all the dance sequences were aesthetic and performed well.
Lagaan was a period film set around the time of British rule and revolves around the game of cricket.Saroj Khan won the ‘American Choreography Award’ for Lagaan. She made everyone dance to her tunes yet again with ‘Dola Re Dola’ from Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit starrer Devdas winning the National Award and Filmfare for Best Choreography. Kajol’s performance in Fanaa was well appreciated; especially her performance to ‘Des Rangeela’ from the film. ‘Tere Bina’ from Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Guru was shot and performed beautifully winning her the Filmfare for Best Choreography yet again. Jab We Met starring Shaid Kapoor and Kareena KapoorKhan is a favourite film for many and ‘Yeh Ishq Hai’ being their favourite song. This song won Saroj Khan another National Award.
